Description

René Magritte is known as a surrealist whose art questions the boundaries between reality and thought. His 1958 work Hegel’s Holiday is one of Magritte’s important works reflecting his complex world of thought.

This work depicts a glass full of water standing on an umbrella. The glass and the umbrella, two independent objects in daily life, are presented here in an unusual combination. With this simple yet paradoxical arrangement, Magritte invites the viewer to question physical laws and the functions of objects.

The title of the work is a reference to the famous German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Hegel’s dialectical method of combining opposites into a synthesis may be the conceptual basis for this work. While an umbrella is usually an object that keeps water out, here it assumes the unorthodox function of carrying water. This can be considered as an artistic interpretation of Hegel’s ideas on the unity of opposites.
