Golconda Print Rene Magritte
$23.00 – $209.00
Description
René Magritte, as one of the pioneers of surrealist art, was an artist who managed to astonish the viewer by presenting ordinary objects and scenes in unexpected contexts. His Golconda, completed in 1953, is one of the most striking examples of this approach.
Golconda draws attention with the repetition of male figures in hats and coats floating in the sky. Although these figures seem to float above the cityscape, they also give the impression that they might be falling to the ground. This double meaning creates an ambiguity unique to Magritte’s art. The absurdity hidden in a routine image pushes the viewer to question the perception of reality.
The title of the work is associated with the city of Golconda in India, a symbol of historical wealth. This title, combined with the content of the painting, can be interpreted as an ironic criticism of materialism, individualism and modern society.
