John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) was one of the most respected painters of the Victorian British art world. He is especially known for his moonlit streets, foggy landscapes and atmospheric night scenes. Grimshaw distinguished himself from other artists of his time with his mastery of light and color.
Grimshaw did not start his artistic career at a young age, initially working as a railway clerk. However, his passion for painting prevailed and he turned to art completely. Although he did not receive his artistic education from a formal academy, he quickly gained fame thanks to his attention to detail and original style.

Grimshaw’s most remarkable works emphasize the calm, mysterious and romantic aspects of Victorian cities.
